Abstract

The objective of this work was to demonstrate the existence of a gap between Mexico’s reading comprehension teaching practices and the advances in this subject in other latitudes. The reading comprehension of Mexican elementary school students and the teaching practices was analyzed based on the data reported by the “Instituto Nacional para la Evaluación de la Educación” (National Institute of Educatin Evaluation). Three aspects were considered: 1) The profile of a student with good reading comprehension, 2) A strategy model for the teaching of comprehension, 3) The evolution of applied research in this area. The effects and implications of divorce are briefly discussed.
